The Battle Lines: PC vs Console

Over the years a fine division has been formed between the diehard computer gamers versus the intense hard hitting console junkies. As consoles become more advanced we have seen those rival most modern personal computers. With system specs getting harder and harder to meet as new technology develops we find ourselves with a major choice. Do we upgrade our computer to meet the requirements or get that console that can guarantee to play any game it offers without the need of updating the hardware every few months?

After E3 2010 we saw no new consoles released, but Microsoft did release a brand new edition to the 360 line. This redesigned hardware was to increase the stability and fix some hardware issues. The economy is a dangerous place to risk a new console – so perfecting the existing high end consoles show promise to many companies. This is the first time in the standard 5 year cycle for consoles that a new “replacement” was not announced. Giving hope to many consolers that the trend of upgrading every 5 years may be stretched to a little longer. This does two things:

Number 1: Company makes money off an already popular item.

Number 2: Customers don’t have to buy a completely new system but just more games and add-ons.

The flip side to this argument is the computer gamers. Well, as new software becomes available so does new graphic cards, operating systems, physics cards, etc… Each of these items cost plenty of money that many people may not want to part with. So when you begin to weight the selection… consoles seem to be taking a lead.

As you read this you may believe I am solely biased on this discussion, however I originally was a true diehard computer gamer. Over the last year I have realized however, that most games I enjoy are easily accessible via a console and I never have to worry about my system pushing it. As technology gets more advanced it is hard to stay on top of it without wasting hundreds if not thousands of dollars to keep up in the race. A wise man once said… the moment you buy a computer off the shelf it is obsolete. Sadly this is a very true statement and makes one second guess the future of the gaming genre as a whole. Will computers ever bounce back from the upkeep cost of a console upgrade? Only time will tell. What I can say – consoles if they continue to bring new unique innovation to the gaming world – they will far surpass computers as the primary gaming source.
